Lighthouses and First Flight
Friday, May 4 – Tuesday, May 8, 2012
The Outer Banks of North Carolina is home to some of the tallest lighthouses in the country, as well as the site where the Wright Brothers took their historic first flight on December 17, 1903. This tour includes visits to five of the
15 tallest lighthouses in the country,
including the tallest – Cape Hatteras. We will also be visiting the first lighthouse authorized by the newly formed United States of America (Old Cape Henry) and the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina (Bald Head Island). Along the way we will visit the Wright Brothers’ Memorial in Kill Devil Hills and take a tram tour around Bald Head Island, including the site of the Cape Fear River Lighthouse.
This is a wonderful tour which the Society has hosted on several occasions and includes a unique portion of the east coast and maritime history.
