Tower rises from roof of Keeper's dwelling
Seacoast & to mark entrance to Shoalwater Bay.
Lower half is built of stone, Upper part of brick.
Lighthouse & tower located on crest of sand ridge abt 50' high which runs nearly parallel with shore line & about 1/2 mile distant. From crest of sand ridge, sand slopes inland abt 1/4 mile, ending in a willow swamp; about 20 acres of swamp fenced for pasture

Stone foundation 5' below surface - resting on hard sand. A space 50' wide on 3 sides of lighthouse has to be kept covered with plank to keep sand from blowing away & undermining the foundation.
loose drifting sand
It is not susceptible of being protected by grass, shrubbery or trees.
Lighthouse & tower entirely surrounded by loose drifting sands, nearest ground covered with grass is 600' from tower, in swamp.The old inhabitants say that when lighthouse was built, sand ridge was covered with grass.
